LED Office Lighting

Most London offices are still lit by T8 or T5 fluorescent tubes installed more than a decade ago. Those fittings were considered adequate at the time, but LED office lighting has moved so far ahead that keeping fluorescent is now a significant cost decision with real consequences for your energy bills, your maintenance budget and the wellbeing of everyone who works in the space.

Our engineers carry out LED office lighting installations across the capital, from small serviced offices in Clerkenwell to large open-plan headquarters in Canary Wharf. Every project starts with a free survey and ends with a fully certified installation.

Types of LED Office Lighting We Install

Recessed LED Panels

Recessed LED panels are the most common upgrade for suspended ceiling offices. They drop directly into standard 600x600mm grid ceilings and provide uniform, glare-controlled illumination across the workspace. We specify panels with a unified glare rating (UGR) of 19 or below for screen-intensive environments such as open-plan offices and call centres, in line with CIBSE guidance.

Suspended LED Luminaires

For offices with exposed concrete soffits, polished ceilings or double-height spaces, suspended LED luminaires create a professional look while delivering excellent illuminance levels. We supply direct-indirect models that bounce light off the ceiling for a softer, more natural feel. These are particularly effective in design studios, creative agencies and client-facing reception areas.

Task Lighting

LED task lighting supplements general overhead illumination at individual workstations. It allows people to adjust the light level at their desk without affecting the whole office, which is useful in mixed-use spaces where some tasks require higher lux than others. Our design team integrates task lighting into the overall scheme from the outset.

Tunable White Systems

Tunable white LED systems shift colour temperature across the day, typically from a warmer 2700K in the morning to a cooler 4000K to 6500K during peak working hours. Research from the Lighting Research Center (2022) shows that circadian-supportive lighting improves alertness scores by up to 19% in office workers. We programme these systems to run automatically so your staff benefit without having to do anything.

The Benefits of LED Office Lighting

Energy Savings

LED panels use 50% to 70% less electricity than equivalent T8 fluorescent fittings for the same lux output (Carbon Trust, 2023). For a 100-person London office running 250 working days a year, the typical annual saving is between £6,000 and £12,000 depending on floor area and tariff. Payback on the installation cost is usually achieved within 18 to 30 months.

Reduced Eye Strain

Fluorescent lamps flicker at 50Hz, which is often imperceptible but creates cumulative visual fatigue across an eight-hour working day. LED fittings operate at high frequency with no perceptible flicker. Combined with a UGR below 19 and a CRI of 90 or above, they dramatically reduce the eye strain and headaches that many office workers attribute to their environment rather than their lighting.

Lower Maintenance Costs

A standard T8 fluorescent tube is rated at around 12,000 hours. An equivalent LED panel is rated at 50,000 hours. In an office running 10 hours a day, that is 5 years for a fluorescent fitting versus 13 years for LED. Across an office with 80 fittings, the reduction in lamp purchases, contractor call-outs and disruption to staff is substantial.

Our LED Office Lighting Process

Step 1: Free Site Survey

Our engineer visits your premises, measures existing lux levels, identifies fitting types and quantities, notes ceiling heights and obstructions, and calculates your current annual lighting energy spend. The survey takes one to two hours for most offices.

Step 2: Lighting Design and Proposal

We produce a lighting layout using DIALux software, confirming lux levels at desk height across the whole floor plate. You receive a written proposal showing the new fittings, projected energy savings, estimated installation time and total cost.

Step 3: Installation

Our installation team works to a programme agreed with you. We carry out most office LED retrofits out of hours to avoid disruption. All waste fittings are disposed of responsibly; fluorescent tubes are collected by a licensed waste carrier as they contain mercury.

Step 4: Commissioning and Certification

After installation we commission any dimming or sensor controls, test every circuit and issue an Electrical Installation Certificate confirming compliance with BS 7671. You also receive a schedule of fittings for your asset register.

Why Choose Commercial Lighting London

We are NICEIC approved contractors, which means our work is independently assessed against the highest electrical safety standards. We carry full public liability and professional indemnity insurance. Our engineers are based in London and cover the whole of Greater London with no call-out charge for free surveys.

We specify products from manufacturers whose fittings carry a minimum five-year warranty, so if anything fails within that period we replace it at no cost to you. All our LED panels are DALI-dimmable compatible, ready for building management system integration if your premises require it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is LED office lighting and why is it better than fluorescent?
LED office lighting uses light-emitting diode technology to produce the same or greater illuminance as fluorescent fittings at 50% to 70% less electricity. LED fittings also last three to five times longer, produce no flicker and contain no mercury, making them safer and cheaper to maintain.

Will the installation disrupt our office?
Most LED office retrofits in London are carried out out of hours, evenings or weekends, so your team arrives to a fully upgraded, working office with no disruption. For phased installations in occupied buildings we can work floor by floor during business hours if preferred.

Do I need planning permission to upgrade my office lighting?
No. Internal lighting upgrades are not subject to planning permission. Where your premises are in a listed building or conservation area, we advise on any constraints that may apply to external or facade fittings.

How long do LED office panels last?
Most commercial-grade LED panels we install carry a rated life of 50,000 hours. In an office running 10 hours a day for 250 days a year, that equates to 20 years of expected service life.

Do you handle the disposal of old fluorescent tubes?
Yes. Fluorescent tubes contain mercury and are classified as hazardous waste. We collect all waste tubes and dispose of them through a licensed waste contractor. You receive a waste transfer note for your records.
